THE SOLUTION– KMC Rubber reformulated two recipes that passed all specifications while incorporating 10% tire-derived material.

RESULTS– From 2021 to 2022, more than 2,000 tires were recycled into brand new products instead of going to waste.

When the state of California set a goal to recycle 75% of all waste tires in 2020, KMC Rubber answered the call and lent their expertise to the Tire Incentive Program. Receiving funding from a grant by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), KMC identified two compounds, an anti-fatigue floor mat for the restaurant industry and a heavy equipment acoustical mat for the agricultural industry, which had the greatest potential for converting a portion of the existing recipe to use crumb rubber derived from waste tires. The recipes were reformulated to use 10% tire-derived material and the new compounds passed all physical testing characteristics, even outperforming the original materials on certain properties. With the assistance of CalRecycle, KMC Rubber was ultimately able to divert over 27,000 pounds of tire crumb from the waste stream, equivalent to 2,287 passenger tires.

RESULTS– The aircraft was back in the air within 24 hours

KMC Rubber is a partner with their customer and when a customer calls with an urgent matter, KMC Rubber responds immediately to help in the crisis. Customer service received a call from their customer with an emergency request for a compound to mold a needed part so they could get their plane back in the air. Further details were discussed with the Technical Director and the R&D team was tasked with researching in their extensive library of AMS formulations to determine which one would meet the stringent specifications. KMC mixed and delivered the compound to the customer in less than 4 hours. The customer was able to mold the necessary parts and get the aircraft back up in the air. The fast response saved the company thousands of dollars.

THE SOLUTION– Formulate a compound that withstands extended chemical exposure

RESULTS– KMC Rubber created a compound that met the stringent applications required.

A KMC Rubber customer needed a material that did not break down when exposed to a set of chemicals. Their current compound was not able to meet long-term aging requirements. The customer turned to our technical team to redesign their compound formulation to meet their specifications.

KMC Rubber’s team of R&D specialists were able to design a formula based off of a proprietary compound that was similar in scope of the customer request. Existing formulation that closely matched the requirements of the customer’s application. With over 1,000 proprietary compounds in the AMG library, they were able to immediately accelerate the project by quickly finding a compound that closely met the customer’s needs. The new formula was tested and analyzed to ensure compliance.

The new compound withstood the extended chemical exposure and exceeded the customers expectations.

Our customer, a manufacturer of products for the food industry, was losing business due to costly formulas from expensive materials. The customer worked with other compounders and, although the formulas were changed, there was never any price savings for the customer. The customer, on advice from a material supplier, contacted KMC Rubber to develop a cost-effective formulation. KMC Rubber’s technical team worked with the customer to understand their specific rubber process requirements. KMC Rubber produced a compliant formula and met their cost target, allowing them to successfully retain, and further grow, their business.
